Born in Charleston, South Carolina, raised and educated in Dade County, Florida, an early interest in art and materials led him to a University of Miami degree in Industrial Arts, earned while working as both mechanic and house renovator. He found teaching Industrial Arts so gratifying that he now actively mentors area high school Students and others internationally who show interest and talent.

In 1975, he started a repair and restoration service for artists. His first customer was his father, artist Gene Massin, whose acrylic sculptures needed Barry's precise framing and mounting methods. Soon other artists were flocking to the studio for his assistance with their creations.

with wood, stone and other indigenous materials every day in his South Dade)STudio. Here he can take ideas (often vague and
, sketchy) and converts them into real, workable objects. Barry loves to solve I other people's dilemmas.

To accomplish the most delicate repair or to create a  monumental sculpture, his workshop is filled with state-of-the-art tools, equipment and machinery i.e.; drills, saws, presses, buffers, lathes, polishers,
I planers, joiners, welders and anvils.
When not working on other artists' projects, Barry finds time to create his own sculptures.

His creations have ranged from "Garden Garolyes, whimsical figures constructed of welded metal, to furniture and accessories made of palm and Dade County pine wood. One of his most beloved pieces, a Black Palm throne, is on display at Fairchild Tropical Garden in their permanent collection
Iexhibit. This exhibit is a tribute to the trees lost in the garden during Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

After Hurricane Andrew, Barry gathered dead trees felled by the storm. I He purchased a portable sawmill in order to take advantage of this wealth of building materials i.e.; mahogany, albizia, bischofia, live oak, tropical almond, and all types of palm. Barry believes that environments function well when they are built with the materials of nature and the methods of man.

His wood creations have included mantels, tables, sideboards and benches.
In 1995, Barry was involved with the construction of his parent's home in Coconut Grove using indigenous materials i.e.; coral rock, Dade County pine wood and other local hardwoods. This 2,200 sq. ft. addition to his parents existing 1912 rock and pine bungalow features a unique spiral staircase encased in an acrylic tower, rising from the ground-floor living room to the master bedroom. Each step is a slab from a different tree.
Since 1975, Barry has produced a line of gift items, awards and furniture using local materials. Just to name a few, his creations include puzzles, book- ends, thing pins, and furniture of Dade County pine; bowls, brushes, bird feeders and planters using the coconut; and furniture, walking sticks and veneers from the palms of South Florida.
